ThunderClan
Spottedstar
Spottedstar (formerly known as Cricket, Spottedpaw, and Spottedwhisker) is a beautiful tortoiseshell she-cat with a white underbelly, a white muzzle, white paws, and a white tail tip, and green eyes. She is the current leader of ThunderClan, and mate of Swiftwind.
She was invited to join ThunderClan while she was a kittypet known as Cricket. Redstar gave the young she-cat her apprentice name, Spottedpaw, upon arrival and she began to train to become a warrior. At first, Spottedpaw shared Hawkclaw and Lionpelt as her mentors, and later had Redstar himself as her mentor. She started a great friendship with Sandstream, (then Sandpaw) and the two became best friends. She also developed a close relationship with Swiftwind, a young ThunderClan warrior. She was grief-stricken when he sacrificed himself to save Spottedpaw. Spottedpaw also becomes good friends with Swiftwind's friend, Sunfire, a young warrior as well.
The majority of ThunderClan scorned her at first for her kittypet blood, but the insults eventually died away as she began to prove herself, along with the fact that most of ThunderClan hadn't forgotten that Firestar was a great leader like her many, many seasons ago. At the age of 10 moons Spottedpaw earned her warrior name, Spottedwhisker. This also happened at the end of the first book, Into the Unknown, in Spottedstar's Story.
Spottedwhisker is given her first apprentice, Moonmask (then Moonpaw) in Earth and Air (the second book in Spottedstar's Story). At the beginning of Forest of Whispers (third book) she is given her second apprentice, Flameheart, who is kin of Firestar. Her third apprentice, Runningpaw (a pale brown tabby tom) is killed by a fox, right before Sunfire sacrificed himself to save ThunderClan. Spottedstar then promises to train a new apprentice the right way, and protect it even with the cost of her life.
Spottedstar succeeded Redstar as leader of ThunderClan when Redstar died saving Spottedstar from the foxes set free by Hawkstar at the end of A Mystic Force (fifth book) and becomes a full leader at the start of The Darkest Night (sixth book).
Respectively, the cats that gave Spottedstar her nine lives were: Lionpelt, a former ThunderClan deputy who was killed in a ShadowClan attack; Orangetail, the ThunderClan deputy before Lionpelt, who was killed by Hawkclaw secretly after a battle against RiverClan; Silverstripe, the lost WindClan mate of Spottedstar's friend who died shortly after she had given birth to Snowstorm's kits; Skyheart, a recent ThunderClan victim of Hawkstar's and a friend of Spottedstar's; Brackenface, another ThunderClan victim and Flameheart's foster mother; Runningpaw, her young apprentice who was killed by a fox during the Attack of the Fox; Brightsoul, a former medicine cat of ThunderClan and Winterwing's mentor, and also a close friend of Spottedstar's; Swiftwind, a young ThunderClan warrior, and also Spottedstar's mate; and finally, Redstar, Spottedstar's former leader and mentor.
Each cat gives Spottedstar a different trait for her new life: Lionpelt gives her courage, to use in the defense of the Clan; Orangetail gives her justice, to use to judge the actions of others; Silverstripe gives her loyalty, to use to guide the Clan in times of trouble; Skyheart gives her tireless energy, to use to carry out the duties of a leader; Brackenface gives her protection, to use to care for the Clan as a mother cares for her kits; Runningpaw gives her mentoring, to use to train the young cats of the Clan; Brightsoul gives her compassion, to use to for the elders of the Clan, the sick, and all those weaker than herself; Swiftwind gives her love, to use for all the cats in her care ; and finally, Redstar gives Spottedstar nobility, certainty, and faith, to use to lead the Clan in the ways of StarClan and the warrior code.
During the battle with the mountain lion in the climax of The Darkest Night, Spottedstar is knocked unconcious. After she recovers, however, Spottedstar kills the mountain lion after Sunfire kills the fox.
Spottedstar brought back her deceased mate, Swiftwind, to life. She only has eight lives left now. While bringing back Swiftwind, Tigerstar came as well, though no cat knows where he is at the moment, though cats clearly notice that something is wrong.
Less than a moon after Swiftwind's return, Spottedstar becomes pregnant with his kits, much to the dismay of her medicine cat.
Mentor: Hawkclaw, Lionpelt, Redstar
Apprentices: Moonmask, Flameheart, Runningpaw, Jaguarpaw
Mate: Swiftwind (ThunderClan)
Kin: Jade (mother), Wolfy (father), Lionkit, Leafkit, Bramblekit, Talonkit (kits)
Born: Before Into the Unknown
Appearance: Tortoiseshell she-cat with a white underbelly, white paws, and a white tail tip and green eyes.
Age: 25 moons
Winterwing
Winterwing (formerly known as Winterkit and Winterpaw) is a pretty tortoiseshell she-cat with a white underbelly and legs. She has pale green eyes with brown spots mixed in. She demands respect and gives it out just as easily, making her a valued ThunderClan medicine cat. She is the lone survivor of her family, and is known to get prophecies and warnings from Starclan through her siblings and mother. This she-cat is close friends with most every cat in the clan, though she has her spats every now and then with the apprentices.
At first as an apprentice, Winterwing (then known as Winterpaw) was trained under the standard warrior, then deciding to switch to the previous ThunderClan medicine cat, Brightsoul. Brightsoul was killed by the fox that attacked the camp, giving Winterwing, who’d already received her warrior name by then, the chance to become her clan’s only medicine cat for the moment. She struggled with her apprenticeship, striving to prove to herself that she could heal any cat because she failed to do so with her family. Though having her family’s death was not her fault, the young she-cat takes it as her responsibility to show she is a proper medicine cat. She detests the season of leaf-bare, mourning the time of death of her siblings and mother who died from the illness of greencough. Winterwing used to put (and still puts) pressure on herself as being the remaining one of her family line and pushes herself to be successful. Winterwing has remained loyal to the ways of a medicine cat, finding no cat to love or having loved her, and now all she wishes is for an apprentice, whom can help her with the daily injuries and wounds around the clan.
When she receives a prophecy, she sees it through visions or dreams, and the riddles are normally said through the appearance of her brother, a sleek white tom, Icekit, sister, a gentle brown colored she-cat with brilliant red spots, Cherrykit, or mother, a brown and white furred she-cat, Whispermist. She had never known her father and therefore hasn’t yet seen him; she thinks that at the turning point in her life, she will see him and know him.
The reason she takes her family so seriously is because her father was killed before she was born. She knew that his name was Frightstorm and that he had loved his mate very much, enjoying the thought of being a father. He apparently was a tortoiseshell cat like Winterwing, only he had no white on his body. He was bulky and towered over most cats of his age, scaring ones who didn’t know him and being admired by the ones who did. While defending his clan with his brutally awesome fighting skills, he was taken down like a true warrior, buried under many fighting cats, some of his allies and other of his enemies. He took the brunt of the attack and was killed from blood loss. What Winterwing does not know yet is that Whispermist and Frightstorm had decided that a she-cat they knew they’d have would be named Winterkit. Whispermist felt a special connection to Winterwing as a kit, so the mother proceeded to call the tortoiseshell female Winterkit, as her deceased mate wanted. (Winterwing will find this out this information during the WOTF plot.)
Winterwing is a very skilled healer, devoting her time to work with herbs and help in wounds. While being a normal apprentice, not yet having made the decision of becoming a medicine cat, Winterwing (then known as Winterpaw) didn’t mind the fighting, but the thought of tearing apart something that was born and lived for their clans made her skin crawl. She quickly made the choice of becoming StarClan’s trustworthy cat when she accidentally injured a fellow apprentice, making them bleed.
Despite enjoying her clan’s company, she is independent, asking for help when she thinks she needs it and denying it when she really does need it. She enjoys hunting and her job, sometimes just lying under Silverpelt, trying to be close to her ancestors. She loves her clan and occupation as medicine cat, also enjoying the scenery of ThunderClan while collecting herbs.
Winterwing has a close relationship with Spottedstar, the Thunderclan leader, because Winterwing can sense when Spottedstar’s love is near the clan. She also has close relationships with the other medicine cats of other clans, even taking the time to play a joke on the new apprentices, telling them they have to go through a horrible initiation to become a medicine cat.
Mentor: Brightsoul (deceased)
Apprentices: Sorrelpaw (temporarily)
Mate: None
Kin: Whispermist (mother), Frightstorm (father), Cherrykit, Icekit (siblings), (all deceased).
Redstar
Redstar is a short-haired red tabby tom with gold eyes. It is said that he looks like an Abbyssinan cat, but that has not been confirmed yet. He is the mate of Leafmist and father of Tawnyfur and Stormclaw.
As a warrior, Redstar (then Redwhisker) had a forbidden affair with Leafmist, a RiverClan warrior. Leafmist and Redwhisker had a relationship very similar to that of Graystripe and Silverstream. Leafmist died bearing Redwhisker's kits, so the tom took them to join RiverClan. He had to come back, though, because a tom named Nettleclaw, who is very much alike to Thistleclaw, would become deputy in his place. No cat besides Spottedstar, Winterwing, Moonmask, Wildheart, Tawnyfur, Stormclaw, Swiftwind and Sunfire know of this relationship.
Redstar has had many regrets about giving up his two kits and watching them grow up in another Clan, but he feels that he had to in order to keep ThunderClan out of the paws of a brave, yet violent and reckless tom named Nettleclaw. In Redstar's opinion, Nettleclaw would have "torn apart ThunderClan by charging into unnecessary wars." He goes on to explain that Nettleclaw had died, attacking a WindClan patrol, a few seasons before Spottedwhisker joined ThunderClan.
During Forest of Whispers Redstar is emotionally and mentally shattered at the betrayal of his deputy, Hawkclaw (who later joins ShadowClan and becomes ShadowClan's leader). He then becomes very unstable during Gathering Storm, accusing his own Clan of being disloyal and only trusting Spottedwhisker, Graystorm and to some point Brightsoul.
In A Mystic Force Redstar is still broken and refuses to name apprentices that are ready to become warriors. He thinks that StarClan is at war with him and indirectly causes the death of Spottedstar's apprentice, Runningpaw, and the deep v-shape in Stormwhisker's ear, when he lashes out when he becomes enraged after he accuses Sleetpaw (Sleetstorm) of stealing his prey and he stands up for her. Redstar gets a small wake-up call after that, but is still a shell of his former self.
At the end of A Mystic Force Redstar regains his former mindset in a flash, even though he loses his last life by saving ThunderClan and Spottedwhisker from the foxes. As he dies, he tells Spottedwhisker of the prophecy that sparked the origin of Spottedwhisker's name and that she will be a great leader. Redstar is then met by Leafmist, and goes with her to the ranks of StarClan. Tawnyfur and Stormclaw forgive Redstar before he dies, and he dies happily with his kits by his side. Hawkclaw witnesses Redstar's death, but doesn't play a major role in that chapter.
In The Darkest Night, Redstar gives Spottedwhisker her ninth and final life, with the gift of nobiltity, certainty, and faith, and her leader name, Spottedstar.
Mentor: Stormwind
Apprentices: Sunfire, Spottedwhisker, Silverfur, Skyheart.
Mate: Leafmist (RiverClan)
Kin: Tawnyfur (daughter), Stormclaw (son), Sorrelpaw (grandkit; Tawnyfur's daughter).
Death: Drowning. (final life)
Appearance: Huge, muscular red tabby tom (very similar to Red Abssinian)
Age: 56 moons
Swiftwind
Swiftwind is an orange tom with dark tabby markings on his body and tail. He has a white muzzle and underside and a white tail tip, and four white paws. He has "the deepest blue eyes a cat has ever seen", according to Spottedstar.
He was a young, wise warrior of ThunderClan during Into the Unknown and when Spottedpaw was an apprentice. He has become a legend among cats for young love and the ultimate sacrifice, and often visits other cats besides Spottedstar in dreams. Swiftwind was known to have a "starry scent", which may have been a combination of smells from Swiftwind's times near the mountain air and his loving to swim. He was Spottedstar's mate, and Swiftwind gives Spottedwhisker her eighth life with the attribute of love during her leader ceremony at the Moonpool in The Darkest Night.
Swiftwind is known to appear to Spottedstar, even in broad daylight, and is visible to some cats like Winterwing and Thornpaw. He also tells queens how many kits and the kits' genders when they ask for his guidance.
Swiftwind was also mentored by Graystorm, Spottedstar's first deputy.
In StarClan, Swiftwind is often seen with Feathertail, a former RiverClan warrior. Apparently the two are good friends.
Swiftwind was brought back from the dead by a special ritual that can only be performed every 250 moons.
Mentor: Graystorm
Apprentices: None
Mate: Spottedstar (ThunderClan)
Kin: Unknown
Death: Took fatal blow for Spottedpaw in ShadowClan raid; Into the Unknown
Appearance: Orange tabby tom with a white underbelly, two white front paws, white muzzle and white tail tip with blue eyes.
Age: 28 moons
Sandstream
Sandstream is a dark tabby she-cat. She has a brown pelt with classic dark black tabby markings along her body, has a white muzzle, two white front paws, a white tipped tail, and amber eyes, which are the color of sand. She is the mate of Sunfire and the mother of Thornpaw.
Sandstream is Spottedstar's best friend in ThunderClan, and is partially the reason Spottedstar, as a kittypet, got accepted into the Clan. The two met when Sandstream (then Sandpaw) attacked Spottedstar (then Cricket) at the border of ThunderClan territory and WindClan territory, thinking she was an enemy warrior.
Sandstream showed feelings for Sunfire about the same time Spottedwhisker started showing love for Swiftwind. She develops a huge crush on Sunfire, confiding in Spottedwhisker that he is noblest and most understanding cat ThunderClan has ever seen, despite the fact that Sunfire is fifteen moons older than Sandstream. The whole Clan notices that Sandstream is fond of Sunfire, except for Sunfire himself, who doesn't figure out that Sandstream is in love with him until Spottedwhisker tells him at their warrior ceremony. The two then become very close, and then inseperable, as the story progresses.
Sandstream is pregnant with Sunfire's kit(s) in A Mystic Force, and gives birth to Thornkit at the climax of the fifth book, losing too much blood in the birth and dying, despite Sunfire and Winterwing's efforts to save Sandstream. It is rumored that Thornpaw has a sibling, but that is unconfirmed.
Sandstream was a choice for deputy at one point when Spottedstar was going to become leader, but then Spottedwhisker is told while she is making her decision that Sandstream is pregnant, and therefore cannot place her as deputy, as that would go against the warrior code.
Even though Sandstream and Spottedstar see each other often in dreams, Sandstream wants Spottedstar to tell her kit, Thornpaw, that she loves him, and she and Sunfire will always be watching over him. This, however, cannot be said until Thornpaw learns that his parents are Sandstream and Sunfire.
Mentor: Lionpelt, Hawkstar
Apprentice: Brightsoul (before she decides to become a medicine cat)
Mate: Sunfire (ThunderClan)
Kin: Thornpaw (son)
Death: Died by loss of blood when kitting
Appearance: Dark brown tabby pelt with black stripes and amber-green eyes.
Age: 19 moons
Sunfire
Sunfire is a golden tom with blue eyes. He has a pure golden pelt that looked like the sun when the sunlight struck his pelt, and was known as ThunderClan's "Yellow Flash". He was a very swift tom and is the mate of Sandstream and the father of Thornpaw.
Sunfire was a young warrior when Spottedstar first arrived in ThunderClan, and was one of her close friends. Sunfire did not show any interest in Sandstream until Sandstream's warrior ceremony, in which her finally realized the magnitude of her feelings for him. When he killed two rogues that threatened ThunderClan by nearly taking Flamekit, he made his kill so swift that Redstar gave him the nickname "ThunderClan's Yellow Flash". He was known as a prodigy to ThunderClan and was considered to be one of the greatest cats that the forest had ever seen.
Before Sunfire died he was working on a new fighting technique that would be able to protect any cat, and would add great speed to the user. He almost finished his technique, but died before he could perfect his new attack.
Sunfire mentored one cat, Wildheart. He was given the young tom to mentor at the same time Moonmask was given to Spottedstar, and trained his apprentice for two moons more than Moonmask, to ensure that Wildheart could be the best he could be.
After Graystorm was killed by being struck by lightning, he succeeded him as deputy. However, his time as deputy only lasted three moons, as he later died saving ThunderClan from a fox. His last words were "For ThunderClan... For the future... I sacrifice my life!" It is rumored that it was Thornpaw's fault that Sunfire died. It was also revealed that Sunfire wanted Thornpaw to be seen as a normal cat, not a cat that took the life of ThunderClan's former deputy and warrior.
Sunfire died on the same night Sandstream died, and the same night his only kit, Thornpaw, was born. It is rumored that he has another kit, that looks just like him, and is still alive and roaming in another Clan, or as a loner.
Sunfire was a choice in which Spottedstar considered bringing back to life, but changed her mind when she remembered that he was already with his mate in StarClan.
Sunfire was also the cat who chose Shadewalker to represent ThunderClan on the journey to Sunset.
Mentor: Redstar
Apprentices: Wildheart
Mate: Sandstream (ThunderClan)
Kin: Thornpaw (son)
Death: Had throat ripped out; ripped out fox's throat in the middle of The Darkest Night
Appearance: Golden-colored tom with blue eyes.
Age: 25 moons
ShadowClan
Foxwhisker
Foxwhisker is a long-haired ginger tom with black-tipped ears, black paws, a white underbelly, a white-tipped tail, a long, bushy tail, long black whiskers, and blue eyes. He got his name from his fox-like appereance.
Foxwhisker was considered a curse to his Clan, as when he was born, his mother was immediatley killed by a loss of blood and his father was struck by lightning. When he was a kit, there were no cats expecting or nursing kits, so he was kicked out of the Clan by a warrior named Shrewfur, his father's friend. Shrewfur blamed Foxkit for the death of his friend, so he made it appear as if a fox had taken Foxkit. But, strangely, the fox that did take Foxkit raised him like one of her own. Foxkit returned to ShadowClan when he reached his sixth moon, finding that Shrewfur had been killed during a ThunderClan raid. Foxkit then trained in ShadowClan like any other apprentice.
When Foxpaw was training, he was still shunned by all of his Clan mates. Even his mentor was not too fond of him. This made him extremely lonely, neglected, and depressed. He made his first friend, Pinepaw, when she was fighting a dog. She was in bad shape, and needed help. Luckily, Foxpaw arrived in time and saved her. Pinepaw's mother, Shortdaisy, then warmed up to Foxwhisker, as well as Pinepaw herself. Eventually, when the rest of ShadowClan warmed up to Foxpaw too; Pinepaw was the former leader, Snakestar's, daughter. Pinepaw and Foxpaw become closer and closer until they eventually become mates. Pinepaw also makes Foxwhisker kind, and not so hateful towards ShadowClan anymore.
Pinefur becomes pregnant with Foxwhisker's kits in leaf-bare, and has four kits in late leaf-bare. Foxwhisker's three sons are Firekit, who is a copy of himself, Twilightkit, a ginger tom with white paws, and Icekit, a silver tabby tom. His only daughter is Runningkit, a copy of Pinefur.
Foxwhisker's first apprentice, Sparrowpaw, is killed when he breaks his neck from falling from a tree. Foxwhisker blames himself, as he was trying to teach Sparrowpaw how to climb trees. He receives his second apprentice, Ragepaw, a day after Sparrowpaw is killed.
Mentor: Tawnystar
Apprentices: Sparrowpaw, Ragepaw.
Mate: Pinefur
Kin: Firekit, Runningkit, Twilightkit, Icekit (kits).
Age: 20 moons
WindClan
Iceclaw
Iceclaw is a huge, silver tabby tom with amber eyes and long white claws. Iceclaw got his name from his long, ice-colored claws. He is the current WindClan deputy.
In Into the Unknown, Icepaw is not talked about much, only seen at Gatherings, and rarely talked about. He has a calm personality, comparable to Brackenfur, a former ThunderClan warrior. He keeps his temper in check, and rarely gets into arguments that become physical. This is why he received Featherpaw as his apprentice, for he was the only cat who could handle her without losing their temper.
Iceclaw attends most of the Gatherings, and now always does, thanks to his position as deputy. He also organizes most things and events in the Clan, and normally leads patrols. Iceclaw is also known for his fighting skills, and leaves deep, stinging, numb scratches on his opponent, also giving his signature claws his warrior name.
It is heavily hinted that Iceclaw has feelings for Feathermask, but he knows that she has her attention on some other cat. Iceclaw, seeming to know that she deserves a cat better than him, and knowing that she would never be able to love him back, begins to let go.
Mentor: Heatherclaw
Apprentices: Feathermask
Mate: None
Kin: Unknown
Age: 29 moons
Feathermask
Feathermask is a silver tabby she-cat with blue eyes. She is a WindClan warrior.
Feathermask is not mentioned much in the six books in Spottedstar's Story, (Into the Unknown, Earth and Sky, Forest of Whispers, Gathering Storm, A Mystic Force, The Darkest Night), but it is known that she was as aggresive as Breezepaw, Mudclaw, and Crowfeather all put together. Feathermask is proud, arrogant, headstrong, and determined, and very loyal to her Clan. She never intended to have a mate or fall in love, but a certain cat, Shadewalker, has swept her off her paws.
Feathermask has gotten in many fights before, in her Clan and in the other three. Her former mentor, Iceclaw, has noticed these, and let her deal with them on her own. In her latest fight, Feathermask was surprised by Shadewalker's skills, and began to fall in love with him.
Feathermask was a strong supporter of Iceclaw becoming deputy, and does not like Bramblemask.
Mentor: Iceclaw
Apprentices: None
Mate: None
Kin: Snowfeather (brother).
